It's All About New!
I have been a photographer for most of my life - since the days of film my camera has documented life, travelled to foreign lands, captured sports, landscapes and wildlife and supplemented my day job. In 2015 I took the plunge and opened a full time photography studio in Nelson BC. I love meeting people and working with them to create photographs for their businesses and events; but through the busy day to day of running a business, my creative side sort of fell to the wayside.
Winter 2024 helped reset my creativity with a big trip to Japan. Skiing legendary deep backcountry snow, discovering temples and snow monkeys, and travelling through a land where language and culture is so different from our own was so exhilarating. In Kamifurano, on the North Island, we happened upon the Goto Sumio Art Museum, - Sumio Goto was a Japanese painter who literally crushed up rocks and minerals to make his paints. His artwork is so stunningly detailed (not to mention life-size in some cases), that his work appeared life-like. I now aspire to create the same impact in my photography.
So while it has appeared to be all quiet on the home front at KDG Photography there has been a lot going on behind the scenes since returning from Japan. The first thing is our new location! We are now nestled in Bonnington/South Slocan area, which is easily accessible from Nelson, Castlegar and Trail BC. Our new space provides a larger shooting area, prep and prop room and houses our office.
I have decided to expand my services to offer experiences that incorporate more creativity by way of portrait artistry. What does "artistry" mean to me? Well in the studio it means that we can explore using studio lights, props, clothing and composition to create stories - your stories - images that reveal your authentic self, alter ego, ambition or fantasy. The end result will be beautiful custom art pieces to display in your home that will not only enhance your decor, but will provide a daily reminder of who you really are and things that are important to you.
Of course, I will still be here to take care of by business clients – your headshots and business events are important to me, however I am excited to take it a step further and embrace my inner creative artist.
