I have been practicing yoga with yogawithmelisa for years. Melisa Kavanaugh is an amazing teacher - down to earth and relaxed yet so focused in her practice. Our classes flow seamless from one asana to the next giving us a workout in body, mind and spirit.
I have never once heard her say "um".
So it was super fun to have Melisa join me in my studio where I could practice my craft of photography with her. The goal was to capture artful images that reflect who Melisa is as a yoga practitioner and her philosophy as a teacher.
Melisa uses yoga as a "tool for self discovery, helping us to be more loving to ourselves and to others" so I wanted to create a warm atmosphere reminiscent of Melisa's "safe space to to explore physical movement, breath and meditation".
As Melisa moved between yoga poses, I experimented with different angles and compositions, aiming to evoke a feeling of intimacy and connection through the lens.
I discovered a similarity between yoga and portraiture - both offering the opportunity to dive deeper and learn more about ourselves. Just as Melisa creates "a space where people feel safe to explore physical movement, breath, meditation, and betterment," I have created my portrait studio with your comfort in mind. It is a place where my clients can relax and enjoy the process of self-discovery while we create amazing "masterpiece portraits".
Melisa enjoys helping people dive deeper inward, as she continue to learn more of who she is, so at the end of our session we took a few minutes to dive deeper and create a completely different set up. In the studio, it was a matter of turning the lights to face a different backdrop and rearranging them to create a different mood.
I love how portrait sessions can be collaborative and interactive, and I always learn something new from my interactions with my clients.
