Whether you are completely comfortable in front of the camera or you are nervous about your upcoming photo shoot, there are a few things you can do to look and feel your best. Read on for some tips from the pros!
Are you an early-bird or do you blossom in the afternoon? Schedule your session at the time of day when you have the most energy and feel your brightest.
HINT: “Morning puffiness” is common so aim to start your morning session several hours after you get out of bed.
Now you are going to think I am channeling your mother, or maybe your family doctor, but these tips really make a difference. The day before you portrait session and leading up to the shoot do this:
Consider hiring the services of a professional makeup artist. Your portrait session is an investment and professional makeup can make a world of difference to your final photograph. In some cases, such as artistic portrait shoots make up will be an integral part of the session. KDG Photography can recommend some excellent local up artists to assist.
All genders can benefit from a little to a lot of makeup – whether it is simply translucent powder to reduce skin shine, a touch of mascara to help make your eyes pop, or the creation of a particular look for the portrait, keep your goals for the final photograph in mind.
Eye make up – the old adage “eyes are the window to your soul” is never more true than in a photograph. Studies show that when a human looks at a photograph, the first thing they seek is the eyes. Connection through the eyes can send a world of messages and make up will help portray the message better than words.
Foundation and Cheek colour – ensure foundation matches your skin tone and is blended perfectly at the jaw line. Avoid oily foundations which reflect light and make your skin look shiny. Unless sparkles are part of the image, avoid blushes with sparkly elements as they can create distracting bright spots in the photograph. Talk to your photographer about contouring makeup. They may prefer to create contouring using lighting and therefore makeup contouring can be counter-productive.
Lip Colour – Ensure the colour matches your look or creative message and blends well with the rest of your ensemble. Even if you don’t wear lipstick, add a clear lip balm with a touch of shine to help smooth the lips and hide dry flakes.
As with make up, consider having your hair styled professionally for your session. No one can blow dry and style your hair quite like your stylist can!
If you colour your hair, book your portrait session at least three days after colouring to allow the colour to calm and any staining on your skin to fade.
Testing, testing: If you want to try a new hair style, test it out long before the session to be sure it is going to work for you.
Whether your stylist does your hair, or you do it yourself, keep these pointers in mind:
FACIAL HAIR
Shave it or save it.... it all depends on the look you are going for, but if you have the option, it is easy to change your look during a longer session by starting with stubble, then shaving partway during the session.
Photograph retouching
Didn’t have time to touch up your roots prior to your session? Did you wake up with a blemish? No worries. A professional photographer can fix that, and a myriad of other "flaws" for you during the post-processing of your portraits.
